Dale Zarrella Sculptor/Painter

Artists I love

Stopped by and had a chat with Maui sculptor and painter, Dale Zarrella this morning at his cottage on the beach, near Canoe Cove in Kihei.  He happened to be out working on one of his latest pieces.  I am a huge fan of Dale’s and must admit have one or two of his wood carvings in my personal collection.  His paintings and sculptures are found in the finest corporate and private collections and museums throughout the world.   Dale spent 18 years as a caretaker in charge of one of Hawaii’s few green turtle sanctuaries on the Big Island.  He would often entertain visiting filmmakers and photographers from all over the world to experience this unique and magical place.  Inspired in 1991 with these ancient creatures of the sea with which he had a deep connection to, he picked up a paint brush to capture their world on canvas. Then he started carving them into Hawaii’s wood.  His first love is sculpting wood and he brings wood into his backyard via helicopter.  He uses natural dried cured wood and shines it with oil.  Now this is Art that I love.

I was excited to be invited back to a reception at his gallery/studio at sunset.
