In this article, I explain what I learned from writing and publishing my own poetry collection, Uprooted: A Season of Grief.

I walk through the process from writing and developing your voice, to submitting poems, shaping a collection, editing, choosing between traditional and self-publishing, working with professionals, and finally getting the book into readers’ hands. I also talk about the importance of building a community around your work and why, for me, the writing itself always has to come first.
